The Walleye is also called the Yellow Pike, and in these parts, a lot of folks call them pickerel, though the fish isn’t actually in the pickerel family. The name “Walleye” refers to the fish’s large eyes that point outward to the sides (as if looking at the walls). These eyes are incredibly sensitive and give the Walleye an advantage over prey in dark and turbid waters. On the plate, it’s a delicate and delicious fish that has been a favorite along these shores for as long as people have been here.
